Membership

Bay Point Yachty Club Incorporated has 200 active members with spouses/significant others. To become a member of the yacht club, a prospect must be nominated and sponsored by a current member in good standing. The different categories of membership are: active, non-resident, life, honorary, and junior. These categories are detailed below under "Candidacy and Admission to Membership".
The annual meeting of the club membership is held during the month of January of each calendar year when the club's Board of Directors report on the year's progress and the members vote on the next year's officers. During this time, the prestigious Richard Andrews Distinguished Service Award is presented to a member in good standing that has made contributions to the club over and beyond what is expected. The 2022 recipient of this award is member, Mary Kennedy.
Other awards presented during this ceremony are the Boater of the Year and the infamous Busted Prop Award. The Boater of the Year Award was presented to Past Commodore Tim Couty and his First Mate, Amy. The Busted Prop Award is given to the boater who has incurred a boating mishap and proceeds to make it worse by his actions in trying to correct the mishap. The dubious honor this year goes to Past Commodore Jeff Brooks.

CANDIDACY AND ADMISSION TO MEMBERSHIP

Each applicant shall submit, with the prescribed initiation fee, an application for membership stating his or her name and address, name of partner and minor children, name and description of any vessel of which he or she is owner, and any other information as may be prescribed.  The application must be endorsed by two Active members and a sponsor, all in good standing, and must indicate by their initials that the applicant has met two members of the Board of Directors.
Each application shall be posted on the bulletin board in the Clubhouse.  Further, the applicant shall be investigated by the Membership Committee to determine the eligibility and suitability of the applicant.  Not less than ten (10) days after the name of the applicant has been posted and following receipt of the report of investigaton by the Membership Committee, the Board of Directors shall vote by secret ballot to accept or reject the applicant.  Two negative votes shall constitute rejection. In case of rejection, or prior withdrawal of the application, the initiation fee shall be returned.
Applicants will be so notified at the time of receipt of the application and given the opportunity to withdraw the application until the board approves the application status as a member in waiting.  the initiation fee paid will only be held until the member in waiting is approved by the Board of Directors.

CLASSES OF MEMBERSHIP

There are five (5) classes of membership in the yacht club.

  • Active
  • Non-Resident
  • Life
  • Honorary
  • Junior

An Active member is any person 21 years of age or over who has signed an application form and who has been accepted into active membership by the board of Directors.  such member shall all club privileges, including the right to vote and hold office. 

A Non-Resident member is any Active member who does not, for a period of one month or more, occupy a cottage, condominium, or home, or keep a boat or any other type of living accommodation in Bay County.  the Active member may apply for Non-Resident membership.  the Non-Resident member shall be entitled to all the privileges of the yacht club except the right to vote or hold office.  Non-Resident membership is not open to new members.

A Life member is any Active or Non-resident member who shall have paid dues for twenty-five (25) years and at the end of the 25th year automatically becomes a life member and shall be exempt from further payment of annual dues.

An Honorary member shall have all the rights and privileges of the club exept the right to vote and to hold office. Honorary memberships expire at the end of each club year unless extended by the new B0ard of Directors.

A Junior member shall have the rights and privileges of the club including the right to vote and hold office.  Qualifying members must meet the following criteria: 

  • less than forty (40) years old
  • pays $500 initiation fee (non-refundable)
  • pay annual dues

Upon reaching forty (40) years of age, the junior member will have to pay the difference between the current initiation fee and the initiation fee for Active membership, at the time of reaching age forty (40).

The Dick Andrews Service Award is given annually to a yacht club member who has made contributions to the yacht club above and beyond what is normally expected of them.  Member Mary Kennedy has continued to serve the yacht club and its members, has supported the current leaders of the yacht club, and has inspired her peers and future yacht club leaders by her actions.
